Gas Tax Agreement
(New Deals for Cities and Communities)

The Governments of Canada, British Columbia and the UBCM entered into the Gas Tax Agreement on September 19, 2005. The Agreement is focused on achieving three outcomes: cleaner air, reduced greenhouse gas emissions and cleaner water. The Agreement will deliver over $635 million to BC over a five-year period through three delivery mechanisms: a Community Works Fund, a Strategic Priorities Fund and an Innovations Fund.

Green City Awards

The Green City Awards will provide funds to local governments that design sustainable and vibrant communities that encourage physical activity, energy conservation, and produce environmental benefits. Up to $500,000 annually, over five years for a total program value of $2.5 million, will be provided to eight local government categories. Six of the categories will reward municipalities based on population and the remaining two will reward regional districts. Deadline for 2007 applications is 1 June 2007.

Green Municipal Fund

The Government of Canada has endowed the Federation of Canadian Municipalities with $550 million to establish and manage the Green Municipal Fund. It operates at arms-length from the federal government. The fund is earmarked to support municipal governments and their partners; to improve the quality of air, water and soil; and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

EcoAction Community Funding Program

Funding support is available to not-for-profit community organizations that are addressing Environment Canada's priorities of Clean Air, Climate Change, Clean Water and Nature.

Canada-British Columbia Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund (CBCMRIF)

A minimum of 80 per cent of the $150 million dollar fund will be targeted towards communities with a population of less than 250,000. At least 60 per cent of funding will go to "green" projects helping rural communities and towns enhance public transit; support environmental energy improvements; address drinking water supply, treatment and distribution needs; improve local wastewater and storm-water sewage treatment.

Effective Thursday 12 October 2006, communities and not-for-profit organizations are eligible to make an application online. Applications will be accepted until 31 January 2007. The Federal Government anticipates that all funding from the current agreement will be allocated by summer 2007.
