Local Government Jurisdiction

Navigating the various levels of government jurisdiction can can be confusing and sometimes frustrating. Particularly when you are trying to determine what projects, bylaws, alternative options and enforcement authority local government has regarding air quality.

With so many players in BC — and not one having clear authority over the issue of air quality and emissions — the responsibility falls to everyone. But the group that has the most to gain when it comes to improving air quality is local government, because it's closer to home — as close as your own backyard.

This section will review the roles of the different government levels, and their roles and authority in relation to air quality.
