Provincial Government

The provincial government, under the Environmental Management Act (EMA), has overall responsibility in BC for waste management, which includes air emissions. The EMA incorporates aspects of the former Waste Management Act and Environment Management Act.
Through a combination of regulations and Acts, the province has authority to regulate air quality. For more information on the provincial regulations and Acts related to air quality, see the Web links in the Resources Section.

The province also has the authority to regulate specific air pollution sources, because it is responsible for monitoring and reporting on environmental quality: in this case, air quality. The provincial government reports can help set environmental benchmarks, targets and standards that will assist with airshed planning.
