Sustain the Momentum

Once you’ve launched the campaign, you’ll need to sustain your momentum. That means reminding people of what they’ve already learned by doing scheduled follow-ups.

Share your results. It can be as simple as sending out a news release, or something fun like having an annual air quality event the year after you launch your campaign. You can invite the public to an event and announce your successes.

If you have created a dedicated Web site for your idling campaign, share your lessons learned so that other municipalities, environmental organizations and members of the public can benefit. And share your results with Natural Resources Canada through their Website.

Other ways to support your campaign efforts are:

  • Create a five-minute drop off and pick up parking space at the front of businesses.
  • Provide internal electric heaters for workers on the road.
  • Look into retrofitting your municipality’s fleet.
  • Get into the idle-free practice yourself!

Fact: The City of Richmond reduced municipal fleet fuel costs by $136,000.00 in one year by not idling, thereby reducing fuel emissions by 177 metric tonnes.

Case Studies:

Rogers Elementary School decreased vehicle drop offs from 90 down to 6.
